Otto Hartmann came on 6 July 1903 as an ensign in the 10th Royal Bavarian Field Artillery Regiment, a. In this regiment he was promoted on March 8, 1905 Lieutenant. On 28 October 1912 he was promoted as regimental adjutant to Lieutenant. With this regiment he took part also in the beginning then at the 1st World War. Later followed the use in several staff positions. On 14 January 1916 he was promoted to captain. In the 1st world war he was awarded both Iron Crosses. After the First World War he was transferred to the Army and was used in the bar of the 7th Division of the army and the 7th (Bayer.) Artillery Regiment. 1922 until October 1924 he was used as a battery commander of the 5th battery on the 7th (Bayer.) Artillery Regiment. In 1925 he was transferred to the command group 2.
On 1 February 1926 he was appointed there to Major. From October 1926 he was then employed in the defense department in the Defense Ministry. On November 1, 1930 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel there. From 1 October 1931 he was then employed on the staff of 7 (Bayer.) Artillery Regiment. In summer 1932 he was restored to the Defense Ministry. There he was promoted on April 1, 1933 Colonel. As such, it was used from that date as a military attaché in Russia. On 1 October 1935 he returned to Germany. There he was on 15 October 1935. Artillery Commander 1 (Arko 1) appointed. As such, he was promoted on April 1, 1936 Major General. On November 12, 1936 he was appointed commander of the 7th Infantry Division. On 1 March 1938 he was promoted to lieutenant general. On 31 July 1939, he handed over his command. On April 1, 1940 he was promoted to General of Artillery. He then led his corps in the western campaign. This him the bracelets were awarded to two Iron Crosses. On August 5, 1940 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. In March 1941, he handed over his command to illness. He was added to until 1 January 1943 in the leader Reserve. On 1 January 1943 he was appointed Commanding General of security troops and commander of military area A. On September 17, 1943, he issued this command and has been restored to the leader Reserve. In mid-February 1944, he made a rod Hartmann which was then used in the Commander in Chief Southwest and Army Group C. On May 2, 1945, he fell into Allied captivity. From this he was released on January 4, 1947.

On November 12, 1936, he was appointed commander of the 7th Infantry Division. On 1 March 1938 he was promoted to lieutenant general. On 31 July 1939, he resigned his command. With the mobilization, he became the Commanding General of XXX. Army Corps appointed. With this he was referring to the beginning of the second world war positions in the West. On April 1, 1940 he was promoted to General of Artillery. Then he led his corps in the western campaign. In this it the clasps were awarded to two Iron Crosses. On August 5, 1940, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. In March 1941 he gave up his command due to illness. He was to offset up to 1 January 1943 in the leader Reserve. On January 1, 1943, he was appointed Commanding General of security troops and commanders military area A. On September 17, 1943, he gave this command and was restored to the leaders Reserve.
