De Valera, Eamon, 1882-1975

De Valera had become Prime Minister of Eire in 1937, a position he held throughout the war. He secured neutrality for Eire and refused to allow Britain to use bases in Southern Ireland, a policy which made CHURCHILL very bitter. De Valera wanted to remove all ties with Britain but he was also afraid that the Germans might invade from France. He refused to join Ulster in a defense union.
