A close friend of HITLER dating from the 1920s, Hess was figuratively second in line to the Fuhrer and his Deputy in the Nazi Party. In May 1941 Hess took it upon himself to act as a peace emmissary and left Germany, alone, in a Messerschmitt no and crash-landed in Scotland. He intended to locate the Duke of Hamilton, whom he had met in more peaceful times, and make him persuade CHURCHILL to surrender before Britain was annihilated. Hess was astonished to find himself treated as a POW. Interned in England until after the war he was tried at Nuremberg, sentenced to life imprisonment and incarcerated at Spandau Prison in Berlin.
