Appendix: Inventory of goods disbursed to John Stone and the Sixth Dividend of Crown Creditors, 1651–3

An inventory of goods disbursed to John Stone and the Sixth Dividend of Crown Creditors on 23 October 1651 and 2 August 1653, reconstructed from the inventory of the Contractors of the Commonwealth Sale, 1649–54 (Millar, 1972), Daniel Taylour’s inventory of goods disbursed to the Sixth Dividend, c. 1654, (British Library, Add. MS 37682 fols 24–5, ‘Divident the 6th’), and Capt. John Stone’s ‘discovery return’ of 14 May 1660 (Parliamentary Archives, MS HL/PO/JO/10/1/285). The descriptions of the items are given according to their form in the Contractors’ Inventory, which also gives their original locations in 1649. The Taylour and discovery inventories do not record the attribution to an artist, except in the case of the Leonardo; the Taylour inventory occasionally provides additional clarification about the subject matter, perhaps an indication of Stone’s connoisseurship. Many of the paintings feature in Chiffinch’s c. 1666/7 catalogue of the collection of Charles II (St James’s Palace, Surveyor’s Office, RCIN 1112575).
