New Love Story

She tells her husband a story about young love. How when you’re young, like teenage young, and you meet a boy and you maybe don’t even have anything to talk about but he’s the absolute cutest or maybe you have everything to talk about but either way his hair is shaggy perfection, the kind that his mom thinks is well ready for a haircut but she’s wrong, and you’re at the beach, this boy’s hair is only made more glorious by sun and sand and salt, and you’re at your best friend’s family’s beach house for the summer and you and your best friend and some of the other kids are hanging out, or maybe around, on a stoop outside the ice cream place, and then people break off, your friend has a new boyfriend, sort of, and you and the boy walk home via the beach, or he rides you home on the handlebars of his bike, the ride is wobbly in that way that’s both scary and fun, and it’s dark now, and it doesn’t even matter what happens next, you’re on the handlebars of a cute boy’s bike in the dark, leaning back the tiniest bit into his shoulders, and when you hop off by your best friend’s house, you maybe kiss or you maybe don’t, you probably don’t, but the thing about it that makes it what it is, that you don’t know right now, is the newness of it. You’re a teenager, you think you’ve seen things already, you’re not a baby, you’re no baby seeing a puppy or an airplane for the first time, except you are, and you maybe kiss or you maybe don’t, but you will feel something in your body either way, you will feel something, maybe everything, with the totality of your body, and the thing is, there is a lot you don’t know right now, you don’t know if he likes you likes you, you don’t know if you’ll see him after the summer because he lives somewhere in Westchester, which is a whole train ride away and who ever goes there, what even is Westchester, maybe he will write you letters from Westchester, and you hop off his handlebars and run upstairs to your best friend’s room to tell her all about it, and to discuss what it meant or might mean or could mean, and what it felt like when your shoulder touched his shoulder, like you have no words, even, and you ask her, again, what is it like to kiss a boy, because you don’t know, you haven’t actually kissed anyone yet, maybe kissing will be terrible and disgusting, probably not, but maybe, because remember those kissing parties where we stood by the onion dip, no way were we going to get involved in that, it really did look disgusting, like you didn’t have to have any clue how to do it to know that they for sure had no clue how to do it, plus you’d just seen half of them eating a bunch of onion dip, and she says That was so gross! and she tells you all about what it’s really like, that it’s totally not gross, that with the right boy you will never want to stop kissing, and then you will want to do other things, and you scream and she screams and you fall over laughing, but you want to know when it will happen, when will it happen, will it happen, how can you make it happen, what is the exact right outfit and what is the exact right next move to assure that you will be kissed, you will lie awake for hours on this night imagining and planning and feeling these things in your body that you might not even be made to feel by the cute boy, you don’t know, but above all else, above all else of what you don’t know, you don’t know how few times in your life you might have any exciting bit of this, because even if you spend the rest of your life with cute hair boy like you’re dreaming about right now, the one thing it won’t be when you’re having your golden wedding anniversary is new. She tells her husband this story and she says But what you get is something else, something deeper, something richer, history, intimacy, like maybe she’s trying to convince herself, even, and he nods, and then two months later, when they’re in couples counseling for what will be the last time, and he says he wants to end the marriage, and he says that thing, We had a good marriage, I’m not willing to work on it, I chose someone else, the next (and last) thing he says is I want new love.
