1970 In May, a group called Radicalesbians, consisting of Karla Jay and Rita Mae Brown among others, interrupts the NOW Second Congress to Unite Women to read their manifesto “The Woman-Identified Woman” as a means of empowering women during the lavender scare.
In June, the first Christopher Street Gay Liberation March occurs.
1973 The American Psychiatric Association formally drops homosexuality, per se, as a disease from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
1975 Elaine Noble, who is openly gay, is elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
1976 The first Michigan Womyn’s music festival occurs.
1977 On January 18, Dade County, Florida, passes an antidiscrimination bill that impacts the LGBTQ+ community.
The Save Our Children campaign, led by Anita Bryant, successfully passes an ordinance that repealed the nondiscrimination bill by a vote of 69.3-39.6 percent on June 7.
Harvey Milk is elected as a city supervisor on November 8.
1978 Rev. Troy Perry founds the Metropolitan Community Church on October 6.
California’s Proposition 6 (Briggs Initiative) is defeated on November 7, after Harvey Milk’s successful campaign against it.
Harvey Milk is assassinated on November 27.
1979 The National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights occurs.
