Abbreviations
Correspondence from officers usually uses abbreviations of job titles and branches, such as DG for Director-General. Complicated number and letter designations were often used, and their meaning cannot always be discerned at this distance, which was often the very intention behind their use. In some instances, a number indicates the section within a branch (e.g. B3), but in others it serves another purpose. Where the meaning of the designation is known, it is listed below. In the interests of consistency and brevity, known abbreviations have also been used in these notes where the correspondent wrote the job title out in full. The use of initials has also been standardised here, as has capitalisation within ASIO document titles. Common abbreviations, such as those for Australian states, are not included below; abbreviations not found here may be found in the main ‘Acronyms and Abbreviations’ list at the beginning of this book.

33 Ibid. This was the term used to describe the imbalance between the number of Australian officials in Moscow and the number of Soviet officials in Australia. In ASIO’s mind, there was not enough genuine work for Soviet officials in Australia to warrant having so many diplomats, which meant that rather than performing proper, overt work, a number of the Soviet officials were merely present to engage in espionage.
