Wenden (mod. Cēsis, Latvia) was one of the main castles of the Teutonic Order in Livonia.
First mentioned in 1210, the castle was evidently built by the Order of the Sword Brethren on the site of a hill fort. After passing into the possession of the Teutonic Order, it underwent considerable enlargement into a conventual building. By the fifteenth century, because of its central position in the territories of the order in Livonia, Wenden became the place where the chapter of the order was held. After the destruction of the order’s castle in Riga in 1484, it became the administrative center of the master of the Livonian branch of the order. In 1577 Wenden was captured by Russians, and later by the Poles.
