The following series of excellent photographs depict an extraordinary bridging operation undertaken by German Army engineers. An extensive railway bridge is construced across a wide river valley. Barges are used to anchor wooden pylons in the river bed to support the massive timber trestles. A heavy railway crane is used to place the huge steel girders and lay the railroad tracks. A most impressive feat of engineering.
The pylons must be hammered deep into the river bed to provide support for the trestles.
A good detail shot of the intricate timber construction of one of the trestles.
The first freight cars are brought across.
Almost complete, the bridge can now support two locomotives. The bridge is now capable of carrying heavy military loads. Note the pneumatic boat tethered to the lefthand trestle.
A fine panorama of the finished structure. The length of the bridge is very impressive.
