The Flying Fortress known as 5 Grand was the five thousandth B-17 built at Boeing’s Seattle factory since Pearl Harbor. The bomber was delivered to the 338th Bomb Squadron, 96th Bomb Group, Third Air Division (Square C) at Snetterton, England, on July 14, 1944. The aircraft was assigned the fuselage code “BX” (for the 338th Bomb Squadron) and the letter “H” for its aircraft in squadron number. USAAF
