A deceptively peaceful scene: ZG 3 Hermes lies al anchor in Suda Bay. Crete. 1 August 1942. her awnings set despite the threat of aerial attack. The two funnels visible at the extreme left of the photograph are those of the British heavy cruiser York, which was run aground on 26 March 1941 after receiving damage from an Italian explosive motor boat during the fighting for Greece. After being bombed by German aircraft she was finally given up on 22 May 1941. although she was not scrapped until 1952.

A view aft along the forecastle of ZG.3 Hermes, showing the bridge structure. No 1 and No 2 gun traversed to port.

Hermes running trials in the spring of 1942—at high speed, as the broad wake and the black smoke from the after funnel show. The view is from forward, looking aft along the port side. The AA platform is not yet occupied.
