APPENDIX B
RECOMMENDED READING & BIBLIOGRAPHY
Recommended Reading
Since the first edition of this work was completed in 1999, there has been quite a number of additional works published relating to the 6th Airborne Division in Normandy. In particular, the growth of the internet and world wide web has allowed many documents, articles and photographs to become much more easily available for the battlefield enthusiast and historians alike. Some of those publications are mentioned in the following bibliography; however, a few sources do deserve special mention as they will provide the reader of this work with much extra interesting information about this subject.
Many of the National Archive documents listed below, and more, are available for viewing on the website:
www.pegasusarchive.org/normandy/main.htm Built and maintained by Mark Hickman, this is undoubtedly one of the most valuable sources regarding information on the 6th Airborne Division that has been made freely available on the web. There is also much additional information as well as many articles, links and photographs available to view.
For information directly from those higher ranking officers who were in Normandy the following are particularly recommended: Dropzone Normandy by Napier Crookenden. This covers all the airborne landings in Normandy, and With The 6th Airborne Division In Normandy by R.N. Gale, is an account by the commanding officer of the division.
With regards further eyewitness accounts of veterans who served in Normandy; Neil Barber, in 2002, had published his work The Day The Devils Dropped In: The 9th Parachute Battalion in Normandy – D-Day to D+6. In this book the author has edited many eyewitness accounts together covering the events early in June 1944 and it will provide the reader with much extra interesting detail of this period (available from www.pen-and-sword.co.uk).
For those wishing to know more individual detail about the officers and NCOs who led the 6th Airborne Division, Carl Rijmen (aka Rymen) published his work, Gale’s Eyes, in 2009. After many years of research he has compiled a list of nearly every officer and NCO who served in the 6th Airborne Division. Although this work is not generally available, a copy of the work, and cost, can be obtained by emailing: pegasuscr2002@yahoo.com
In addition to much correspondence, many interviews and tours around the battlefields with veterans during the last two decades, this work has also been compiled with use of the following documents, publications and articles:

FALLEN HEROES PROJECT, CWGC, AANT, MEMORIAL PEGASUS AND MERVILLE BATTERY
Fallen Heroes of Normandy Project
A Photographic Remembrance: an appeal for photographs or information about the servicemen (of all nationalities) who now rest in the Commonwealth cemeteries or French churchyards of Normandy. Formally launched in 2009, the aim of this not-for-profit project is to compile a detailed record of photographs and information of those whose graves are maintained by the CWGC in Normandy.
Information about the individuals and any photographs of the original cross markers or cemeteries, churchyards and areas as they were in the 1940s are also sought.
All information and or photographs received will be acknowledged by email and on the completed database. The project details and completed content to date, are available online at www.fallenheroesphotos.org
Please email any information and scanned photographs (preferably a jpeg file with a resolution of 300 dpi) to fallenheroes@btinternet.com
Or post photographs or information to (please note that only copies should be sent as we are unable to return any material donated):

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission
Established in May 1917 by Royal Charter, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is dedicated to marking and maintaining the graves of all those who were killed in the two World Wars, from the forces of the Commonwealth. The cost of this work is shared between Australia, Britain, Canada, India, New Zealand and South Africa in proportion to the number of graves each country has. There are 23,260 burial grounds in 149 countries with a total of 1,694,988 names commemorated. From the Second World War 347,410 graves have been identified, while a further 23,479 remain unidentified. In addition 231,893 people have no known grave and are commemorated on memorials. The Head Office is at: 2 Marlow Road, Maidenhead, Berkshire, SL6 7DX. Tel: 01628 634 221. There is also an internet web site: www.cwgc.org. A short guide of all the Common-wealth Cemeteries in Normandy can be downloaded from the above website.
The Airborne Assault Normandy Trust
As mentioned in the introduction, the AANT was established to help preserve the history and memory of the 6th Airborne Division in Normandy.
Donations, made payable to The Airborne Assault Normandy Trust, which will be acknowledged, can be forwarded to: Airborne Assault Normandy, Browning Barracks, Aldershot, Hampshire GU11 2BU.
Memorial Pegasus Museum (Musée Mémorial Pegasus)
Inaugurated on 4 June 2000 by HRH The Prince of Wales, the Memorial Pegasus is dedicated to the men of the 6th Airborne Division and their role during the Battle of Normandy.
The museum was built, with the help and assistance of the Airborne Assault Normandy Trust, by the D-Day Commemoration Committee. The collection, on display in the museum and memorial garden, is both historically unique and important, situated as it is, on the battlefield itself.
If any veterans of the 6th Airborne Division, their families or friends, are able to donate any items relating to the battles in Normandy, such donations will be gratefully received, acknowledged, catalogued and preserved for posterity within the museum collection.
For further information and details of how to donate any personal items, please contact:

Merville Battery Museum (la Batterie de Merville)
Opened in 1982, with the help of the Airborne Assault Normandy Trust, the Merville Battery Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the 9th Parachute Battalion. In recent years the area has been excavated to reveal more of the German fortifications and defence structures. In addition, all four casemates are now open to the public and the exhibition has been extended to cover other aspects of history of Merville and the German battery.
If any veterans of the 9th Parachute Battalion, their families or friends, are able to donate any items relating to the battles around Merville, such donations will be gratefully received, acknowledged, catalogued and preserved for posterity within the museum collection.
