THE COST OF VICTORY

German casualties in the campaign amounted to around 10,000 killed and 30,000 wounded. Although significant, those losses were very low compared to Polish casualties of which 66,000 were killed, 133,000 wounded and 420,000 taken prisoner. In addition, the Germans had 1,000 armoured fighting vehicles knocked out during the campaign, mainly disabled by anti-tank guns. According to German sources only 89 PzKpfw I, 83 PzKpfw II, 26 PzKpfw III, 19 PzKpfw IV, 7 PzKpfw 35(t) and 7 Pzkpfw 38(t) were complete write-offs. That aside, it should be noted that the Polish campaign proved to be the most costly and challenging campaign for the Germans, until the invasion of the Soviet Union in June of 1941.

Some 70,000 Polish soldiers escaped to Hungary and Romania, 20,000 to Latvia and Lithuania, the majority eventually making their way west to continue fighting. On 30th September the Polish Government in Exile was established in Paris.
