While at Montauban Christopher Stone, brother-in-law of Compton Mackenzie and junior officer with 22nd Royal Fusiliers, described in a letter to his wife the former German dug-out that he occupied. Although infested with flies the position was typical of many the enemy had constructed for almost permanent use – having wallpaper, an electric bell, cheval glass, cupboards, curtains and a well ventilated deep sleeping area.
