Moved up Death Valley for attack on High Wood midnight (19/7) – rushed wood at 3.35 a.m. – Battalion historian records ‘all opposition was wiped out by 3 p.m. and the wood was in full possession of the 19th Brigade.’ Relieved during night after strong counter attacks and to Mametz Wood. Casualties – 407. Battalion records give over half this number as missing – ‘most never to be seen again.’ Also noted are losses incurred since (14/7) – strength on that day – 40 officers and 1,067 other ranks. At Mametz Wood on (21/7), 5th/6th Scottish Rifles numbered just 199 all ranks.
