1st Battalion. 11th Brigade, 4th Division: In attack on Redan Ridge north of Beaumont-Hamel (1/7) – heavy losses soon after leaving assembly positions – War Diary notes line of shell holes in front of German wire held until ordered to retire during evening to Mailly-Maillet. To Bertrancourt (4/7), Mailly-Maillet (10/7), front line Beaumont-Hamel (15/7), Bus-lès-Artois (20/7), Beauval (21/7). Entrained at Doullens for Ypres sector (22/7). Arrived Longueau from Esquelbecq (18/9) and from there marched to Allonville. To Vaux-sur-Somme (25/9). To Corbie (30/9), Méaulte (1/10) – work carried out unloading trains. To Citadel Camp (8/10), bivouacs south of Montauban (9/10), trenches just east of Guillemont (16/10), front line Lesbœufs sector (17/10). Attack on Rainy and Dewdrop Trenches (18/10) – Regimental history notes advance as being over ‘a vast lake of mud’ – attackers being shot down, drowned in shell-holes or rounded up at daybreak. All officers in 2 leading companies lost. Casualties – 373. To Guillemont (20/10), front line in support (21/10), Bernafay Wood (22/10), Sandpit Camp (25/10), Méaulte (27/10). Entrained at Méricourt for Airaines (27/10) and from there marched to billets at Wanel and Sorel.
2nd Battalion. 24th Brigade, 23rd and 8th Divisions: Arrived Dernancourt (4/7). Moved forward to Patch Alley in preparation for attack on Contalmaison (6/7). Advancing from Shelter Wood at 10.15 a.m. (7/7) there would be stiff opposition from Peake and Bailiff Woods. Later ‘B’ and ‘C’ Companies worked around to the east of Peake Wood and entered southern end of village. Forced to withdraw after strong counter attacks on right and left. At Patch Alley by 4 p.m. To Birch Tree Trench and Shelter Alley at 10 p.m. (8/7), Relieved (10/7) and began march to Bresle – arriving (12/7). Casualties during Contalmaison operations – 277, Entrained for Fouquereuil and Béthune sector (16/7). There rejoined 8th Division. (24th Brigade had transferred from the 8th to the 23rd Division in October 1915). Entrained at Fouquereuil for Pont-Remy (14/10), from there via Méaulte to Montauban. To trenches Lesbœufs-Gueudecourt line (18/10). Attack on Mild Trench 2.30 p.m. (23/10) – ‘A’ and ‘D’ Companies carrying and holding objective. Communication trenches dug back to Shine Trench. Withdrew to Montauban (30/10). Casualties – 194. To Méaulte (31/10), Bernafay Wood (5/11) and from there moved into front line. Relieved in Bennett Trench and to Guillemont (8/11). Later moved to Carnoy. To reserve trenches Flers Line (15/11), Méaulte (17/11).
7th (Service) Battalion. 56th Brigade, 19th (Western) Division): Moved to small ridge overlooking Ovillers in readiness for attack (1/7). Orders did not arrive and withdrew to previous positions at Tara-Usna Line. That evening to railway line just south of Albert. and ‘D’ Companies and party of bombers loaned to 101st Brigade, 34th Division (2/7) – their task to clear Sausage and Heligoland Redoubts and if possible Scots Redoubt beyond. Battalion historian notes that the 2 companies were met at Bécourt Wood by the Brigade-Major (101st Brigade) who remarked upon the age of the officers – the oldest being 26. He openly stated that he did think the companies capable of carrying out their task. When relieved – all objectives had been taken and held against counter attacks. Some 800 yards of front and second line trench had been taken at a cost of just 19 casualties. To trenches in front of La Boisselle (4/7). Attacked through village (5/7) – heavy congestion in the trenches – enemy holding off attack with bombs. Renewed attack (6/7) more successful and enemy driven back. Withdrew to Albert (7/7) and from there to Millencourt and Hénencourt Wood (10/7). To Mametz Wood (19/7) and from there trenches in front of Bazentin-le-Petit. In support during attack on Switch Trench (23/7). Withdrew to south end of Mametz Wood and later Bécourt Wood (24/7). To Franvillers (1/8). Entrained at Fréchencourt for Longpré (3/8) and from there entrained for Bailleul (6/8). Arrived Doullens (5/10) and from there marched to Couin. To Sailly-au-Bois (11/10), front line Hébuterne sector (13/10), camp west of Albert (16/10), bivouacs just north of Albert (18/10), trenches in old German line east of Aveluy Wood (19/10), Stuff and Bainbridge Trenches, Schwaben Redoubt (24/10). Relieved after repulsing strong attack and to Donnet Post (26/10). From there took turns in line at Stuff Trench. Attacked (13/11) – moved forward through thick fog at 5.20 a.m. – all objectives taken by 7 a.m. Relieved in evening and to Aveluy. Moved forward to Hansa Trench (17/11). Attack on Baillescourt Farm beyond Grandcourt (18/11) – held up by machine gun fire and line established across front of village. Position held until relieved early (20/11) and to reserve dug-outs at St. Piere-Divion.
8th (Service) Battalion. 112th Brigade, 37th Division: In line immediately to left of 46th Division during attack at Gommecourt (1/7). Battalion did not leave its trenches but fired smoke bombs and provided a defensive flank for attacking division. From Pommier to Halloy (3/7), Millencourt (4/7), marched through Albert and took up positions in the Tara-Usna Line (5/7). That evening to Bécourt Wood. To reserve trenches in Sausage Valley (7/7). Here Battalion historian noted – the dead of the Tyneside Scottish lay thick upon the ground from their attack of 1st July. Moved forward into support positions (11/7), front line (13/7). Attack on Pozières (15/7) – ‘A’ and ‘B’ Companies advanced at 9.20 a.m. – right flank on Contalmaison-Pozières Road – distance to objective 1,200 yards. Around Contalmaison Wood heavy machine gun fire swept leading waves who were forced to dig in near the chalk-pit. Another attempt during evening also brought to a standstill. Withdrew to support trenches at 2.30 a.m. (16/7) and from there Béhencourt. Casualties – 374. To Bécourt Wood (31/7), support in front of The Quadrangle (4/8), front line Bazentin-le-Petit (7/8) – bombing attack on Intermediate Trench. To Mametz Wood (11/8). Via Bruay, Béhencourt to Longpré and there entrained for Bailleul (20/8). Arrived at Bertrancourt (23/10). To Doullens (27/10), Mailly-Maillet (14/11), line between Beaumont-Hamel and Serre (15/11). Failed attack on Munich and Frankfort Trenches – ‘D’ and ‘A’ Companies advancing at 8.30 a.m. and finding wire uncut in front of Munich. Withdrew to Waggon Road. To Englebelmer (16/11).
11th (Service) Battalion (Accrington). 94th Brigade, 31st Division: Moved forward from Bois de Warnimont (30/6) and assembled (from Mark Copse to Matthew Copse) for attack towards Serre (1/7). From the moment advance commenced, great numbers fell from enemy’s machine gun and rifle fire. One company, identified from the air by special markings on their backs, managed to get through German lines and into village. These men were never seen again. Withdrew to Louvencourt (4/7). Casualties – 584. Entrained for Steenbecque and bivouacs in the Foret de Nieppe (8/7). Arrived Doullens from Berguette (8/10) and from there marched to Sarton. To Bois de Warnimont (18/10), front line Serre sector (John Copse) (30/10), Sailly Dell (3/11), Coigneux and Courcelles (7/11), Bois de Warnimont (10/11). Further tours in front line throughout November, resting at Sailly-au-Bois.
