Border Regiment

1st Battalion. 87th Brigade, 29th Division: Followed 2nd South Wales Borderers into attack just south of Beaumont-Hamel (1/7) – War Diary notes that the Borderers were ‘wiped out by machine gun fire in our own wire.’ It is also recorded that Battalion suffered the same fate, just small groups of 6 or so being left and sheltering as best they could in shell holes. Advance brought to a standstill at 8 a.m. Withdrew to Acheux (2/7). Casualties – 619. To Mailly-Mallet (17/7), front line south of Beaumont-Hamel (22/7), Bus-lès-Artois (24/7), Amplier (25/7). Entrained at Doullens for Proven (27/7). Arrived Longueau (8/10) and marched to Allonville. To Buire (10/10), Fricourt (13/10), Bernafay Wood (19/10), Switch Trench (20/10), front line Gueudecourt sector (Grease and Gap Trenches) (21/10), Bernafay Wood (27/10), Albert (29/10). Entrained for Airaines (3/11) and from there marched to Allery. To Carnoy (15/11), front line Lesbœufs sector (16/11).

2nd Battalion. 20th Brigade, 7th Division: Moved forward from Morlancourt for attack on Mametz during night (30/6). Advanced in 4 lines 7.27 a.m. (1/7) – strong machine gun fire from both the village and Fricourt further to the left. All objectives – Danube Trench, Apple Alley, Shrine Alley, Hidden Lane taken by evening and gains consolidated. Casualties – 343. To Citadel Camp (3/7), Ribemont (5/7), Minden Post (11/7), trenches in front of Caterpillar Wood (13/7). Attack on Bazentin-le-Grand Wood (14/7) – first line moved forward to Flatiron Copse and from there crawled on to within 30 yards of enemy. Went into action at 3.25 a.m. taking all objectives and consolidating on a bank just beyond northern edge of wood by 4.40 a.m. Casualties – 220. To Pommiers Redoubt (15/7), Caterpillar Wood (19/7), Dernancourt (20/7). Entrained at Méricourt for Hangest (22/7) and from there marched to Breilly. Entrained at Hangest for Méricourt and marched to billets at Buire (12/8) – camp in field north of church. To Fricourt (3/9), via Montauban, Bernafay Wood to trenches around Ginchy (4/9). In support during operations at Ginchy and Guillemont. Via Montauban to bivouacs south of Fricourt (7/9), Buire (8/9). Entrained at Albert for Airaines (9/9). Entrained at Longpré for Bailleul (17/9).

1/5th (Cumberland) Battalion (T.F.). 151st Brigade, 50th (Northumbrian) Division: Arrived Candas from Godewaersvelde (11/8) and from there marched to Beaumetz. To Vignacourt (15/8), Rainneville (16/8), Baizieux Wood (17/8). ‘B’ and ‘D’ Companies to Baizieux (30/8). To Bécourt Wood (10/9). Work parties provided for burying of cables near Railway Wood. To Shelter Wood (14/9), Quadrangle Trench (15/9) and from there positions in the south-west corner of Mametz Wood. Later went on for attack on Starfish and Prue Trenches – War Diary records late arrival at assembly trenches and unable to advance with main waves. Moved forward at 11 p.m. to The Bow and dug in. Casualties – 6 officers and about 100 other ranks. Small parties reached Prue Trench (16/9) but driven back to The Bow. Renewed attack on Starfish Line (18/9) – leading waves went forward at 5.50 a.m. – driven back by heavy machine gun fire. ‘A’ Company to strong-point north-west corner of High Wood (19/9). Remainder withdrew to Swansea Trench. Battalion to south-west corner of Mametz Wood (20/9). To Swansea and Clark’s Trenches (24/9), Prue Trench, Starfish Line and Crescent Alley (28/9). ‘A’ Company withdrawn from line and sent to isolation camp near Fricourt on account of outbreak of dysentery (29/9). Remainder sent forward to reinforce 1/8th D.L.I during bombing attack on Flers Line. Attacked (1/10) – advanced with 1/8th D.L.I – objectives taken and consolidated. Withdrew to Swansea Trench (2/10). To Bécourt Wood (3/10), Hénencourt Wood (4/10), Mametz Wood (17/10), Hénencourt Wood (22/10), bivouacs near Bécourt (23/10), Mametz Wood (25/10), Drop Alley and Flers Line (3/11). Took over front line (Snag Trench and Snag Support) during attack on Butte de Warlencourt (5/11). Relieved and to Mametz Wood (6/11). Working parties provided for road making.

6th (Service) Battalion. 33rd Brigade, 11th (Northern) Division: Arrived Léalvillers from Canettemont (2/9). To Bouzincourt (5/9), Donnet Post (6/9), front line facing Thiepval (12/9). Attacked and gained part of Danube Trench (16/9). To Ovillers (18/9), Englebelmer (20/9), Mailly-Mallet (21/9), Donnet Post (25/9), front line (26/9) – attacked Joseph and Schwaben Trenches 12.35 p.m. – objectives carried by 12.45 p.m. – 5 machine guns and 191 prisoners captured. Moved forward to reinforce 9th Notts and Derby in Zollern Trench (27/9) – ‘C’ Company attacked and took Hessian Trench 3 p.m. War Diary notes ‘a bad night’ in Hessian with heavy and very accurate shelling. Counter attack driven off about 7 p.m. Withdrew to support positions (First Street) (29/9). To Hédauville (30/9), Léalvillers (31/9), Montigny-les-Jongleurs (1/10), Cramont (2/10), Bonneville (14/11), Contay (15/11), Varennes (16/11).

7th (Service) Battalion. 51st Brigade, 17th (Northern) Division: Moved up from Morlancourt to old front line at Fricourt (2/7). To positions in front of Fricourt Wood for attack on Bottom Wood (3/7) – Railway Alley taken at 11.30 a.m. – ‘D’ Company going on up the slope encountered strong opposition at next trench before entering wood. Here for a time they would be surrounded by the enemy. Objectives later taken and consolidated. Relieved during night and to Fricourt Wood. To Méaulte (4/7), front line (Quadrangle Trench) (7/7). Bombing attack on Pearl Alley and Quadrangle Support (8/7). To Fricourt Wood (9/7). Entrained at Dernancourt for Saleux (11/7) and from there marched to Saisseval. To Ailly-le-Haut-Clocher (14/7). Entrained at Hangest for Méricourt (23/7) and from there marched to bivouacs 1 mile north-west of Buire. To Pommiers Redoubt (1/8), front line Delville Wood (4/8). Attack at 4.30 p.m. (7/8) failed. To support positions at Montauban Alley (9/8), Bienvillers (15/8), front line Hannescamps sector (27/8), St. Amand (4/9), Halloy (11/9), Sailly-au-Bois (17/9), Humbercamps (19/9), Halloy (22/9), Barly (23/9), Hiermont (24/9), Barly (2/10), Halloy (3/10), Sailly-au-Bois (4/10), front line Hébuterne sector (5/10), Sailly-au-Bois (8/10), Souastre (14/10), Halloy (17/10), Doullens (19/10). Moved by buses to Méricourt (22/10) and from there marched to Ville-sur-Ancre. To Citadel Camp (27/10), Trônes Wood (29/10), support lines between Lesbœufs and Gueudecourt (Needle, Windmill and Mail Trenches) (30/10), front line (1/11). Successful attack on Zenith Trench (2/11) – gains held against counter attacks. To Montauban (3/11), support line (7/11), front line (8/11), support (10/11), Montauban (11/11), Sandpit Camp (12/11). Entrained at Edgehill for Hangest (15/11) – ‘C’ and ‘D’ Companies marching to billets at Le Mesge, rest to Le Mesge (16/11).

8th (Service) Battalion. 75th Brigade, 25th Division: From Forceville moved through Martinsart Wood to front line south of Thiepvai (2/7). Attacked 6 a.m. (3/7) – about 180 yards of German line taken but later forced to retire. Casualties – 444. Withdrew to southern side of Aveluy Wood (4/7). Via Albert to reserve line trenches at Usna Redoubt (7/7), front line (11/7). Attack on southern side of Ovillers dawn (14/7) – all companies gained objectives with little resistance. To Senlis during night (17/7), Hédauville (18/7), Amplier (19/7), Acheux (23/7), Mailly-Maillet Wood (25/7), front line opposite Beaumont-Hamel (30/7), Auchonvillers (6/8), Bois de Warnimont (9/8), Raincheval (15/8), Forceville (17/8), Aveluy Wood (18/8), Hédauville (22/8), The Bluff and Aveluy Wood (25/8), front line (Hindenburg Trench) (26/8), Bouzincourt (1/9), front line (2/9), Bouzincourt (7/9), Léalvillers (8/9), Amplier (10/9), Domléger (12/9), Amplier (25/9), Léalvillers (26/9), Bouzincourt (29/9), Ovillers (30/9), trenches on right of Pozières (5/10), Crucifix Corner (6/10), front line (Stuff Redoubt) (15/10). Attack on Regina Trench (21/10) – objective taken – attack described in War Diary as ‘sudden and swift.’ To Bouzincourt (22/10), Warloy (23/10), Gézaincourt (24/10). Entrained at Doullens for Bailleul (29/10)

11th (Service) Battalion (Lonsdale). 97th Brigade, 32nd Division: Attack on Leipzig Salient (1/7) – advanced from assemble positions in Authuille Wood at 8 a.m. – War Diary records that Battalion came under very heavy Machine Gun Fire from The Nord Werk on right flank. Commanding Officer Lieutenant-Colonel P.W. Machell killed along with almost all the officers. Casualties – almost 500. To Crucifix Corner (3/7), Contay Wood (4/7), Senlis (8/7), front line (9/7), Crucifix Corner (12/7), Bouzincourt (16/7). Began march to Béthune sector. Arrived Longuevillette from Moncheaux (18/10). To Hérissart (21/10), Bouzincourt (23/10), Hérissart (30/10), La Vicogne (31/10), Contay (13/11), Black Horse Bridge (15/11), Englebelmer (16/11), assembly positions Redan sector (17/11). Attack on Munich and Frankfort Trenches (18/11) – advanced at 6.10 a.m. – War Diary notes that leading waves got well over Munich Trench ‘the spirit of the men being a fine sight to see in spite of the intense cold.’ Later fell back to Waggon Road with high casualties. Relieved and to Mailly-Maillet (19/11).
