To Rainneville via Vignacourt (7/7), Franvillers (8/7), Albert (10/7), Mametz Wood (15/7) – later advanced to south side of Bazentin-le-Petit Wood and in action northwestward. Attack on communication trench (later called Welsh Alley) running north-east to the Switch Line. (16/7)–(17/7). To Bécourt Wood (19/7), Albert (20/7), Bécourt Wood (22/7), Albert (23/7), Contalmaison in reserve (24/7). Relieved 1st Gloucestershire in front line south-east of Pozières (25/7). Attack on Munster Alley (26/7). Casualties – 132. To Millencourt (27/7), Bécourt Wood (15/8). Moved to Quadrangle Trench under orders of 2nd Brigade (19/8). To Bécourt Wood (20/8). Later to Mametz Wood and from there assisted 1st Northamptonshire in action at The Quarry. Took up positions in old German line between Bazentin-le-Petit and High Wood (21/8). War Diary records an incident here involving a single German soldier who was shot while attempting to get into the trenches. His papers later revealed that he was returning from leave and was trying to rejoin his unit at the position that he left it. Relieved and to Albert (27/8). Casualties – 267. To Lozenge Wood (2/9), north-east corner of Mametz Wood (5/9). Attacked High Wood with 1st Gloucestershire (8/9). Casualties – 208. To Mametz Wood (9/9), Hénencourt Wood (11/9), Franvillers (12/9), Hénencourt Wood (16/9), Black Wood (18/9), trenches north and north-west of Flers (21/9), Bécourt Wood (26/9), Millencourt (28/9), Hénencourt Wood (29/9), – Fressenneville (3/10). D Company to Bécourt (28/10), Baizieux (31/10). To Mametz Wood (1/11). Work carried out on roads and the clearing of the wood. ‘D’ Company rejoined (16/11).

1/6th (Glamorgan) Battalion (T.F.). Pioneers, 1st Division: Moved at midnight from Fouquereuil to Doullens (6/7). To Vignacourt (7/7), St. Gratien (8/7). ‘A’ and ‘C’ Companies to Dernancourt (working around Contalmaison) and ‘B’ and ‘D’ to Bell Vue Farm (clearing battlefield) (12/7). ‘A’ and to Contalmaison (13/7). ‘B’ and ‘D’ began work on roads and at Scots Redoubt (14/7). ‘A’ and ‘C’ to Albert (19/7). Battalion worked on new front line trench between Pozières and Bazentin-le-Petit Wood. To Baizieux Wood (26/7). Working around Hénencourt Wood and Albert. To Fricourt Wood (15/8). 9th (Service) Battalion. 58th Brigade, 19th (Western) Division: Moved from position near the railway, 1/4 mile south-west of Albert, through town and into Tara-Usna Line (1/7). Party of bombers took part in assault on La Boisselle (2/7). Later moved into village and helped consolidate and extend position. Casualties – 124. To Heligoland Trenches (7/7) and took part in attack towards Bailiff Wood. Regimental historian Major-General Sir Thomas O. Marden records that companies during the advance lost direction and became mixed up with brigade on their right. Subsequently the Welsh got into Contalmaison and after a brave fight came out of action under a company sergeant major, all officers having become casualties. To reserve billets at Albert (9/7) and from there to Baizieux Wood. Casualties – 174. Via Hénencourt, Millencourt and Albert to Bécourt Wood (20/7), via Fricourt to trenches in southern half of Mametz Wood (21/7). To Bazentin-le-Petit in support (23/7), front line (27/7), Bécourt Wood (29/7), Béhencourt (30/7). Entrained at Fréchencourt for Longpré (3/8) and from there marched to Pont-Remy. To Bailleul (6/8). Entrained at Bailleul for Doullens (5/10). Arrived (6/10) and marched to billets at Bois de Warnimont. Via St Léger, Coigneux, Sailly-au-Bois to line Hébuterne sector (7/10). To Sailly (9/10), Vauchelles (16/10), Hérissart via Raincheval and Toutencourt (17/10), Bouzincourt (21/10), front line (Stuff Redoubt) (26/10), Donnet Post (30/10), Bulgar Trench (2/11), Leipzig Redoubt (5/11). In close support (11/11). Relieved 6th Wiltshire in line at Stuff Redoubt (13/11). ‘A’ Company carried out raid near Stump Road and Lucky Way due south of Grandcourt (14/11). To Wellington Huts (18/11).

10th (Service) Battalion (1st Rhondda). 114th Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division: At Puchevillers (1/7). To Franvillers (3/7), Heilly (4/7), Citadel Camp (5/7), Pommiers Redoubt (9/7). In support during 114th Brigade’s attack on Mametz Wood (10/7.) Casualties – 314. To Citadel Camp (12/7). At 4.30 p.m. marched to Méaulte and entrained for Longpré. To Vauchelles (13/7), Domqueur (14/7), Couin (15/7). Took over line G sector trenches near Hébuterne (16/7). To bivouacs near Sailly-au-Bois (19/7), front line (23/7), Bois de Warnimont (28/7). Entrained at Doullens for Arques near St. Omer (30/7).

13th (Service) Battalion (2nd Rhondda). 14th Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division: Moved from La Vicogne to Puchevillers (1/7). To Franvillers (3/7), Heilly (4/7), Citadel Camp (5/7), Pommiers Redoubt via Minden Post (7/7). On right of 114th Brigade’s attack at Mametz Wood (10/7). Relieved and via Minden Post to Citadel (11/7). Here the roll was called and 12 officers and 350 other ranks were unaccounted for (casualty figures given in regimental history as 290). Marched to Buire at 6 p.m. Entrained at Méricourt for Longpré (12/7) and from there marched to Vauchelles. To Domqueur (14/7), Couin (15/7), reserve positions at The Dell – Hébuterne sector (16/7). Working parties dug trench (320 yards) in No Man’s Land (18/7). To Front line (20/7), Sailly-au-Bois (23/7), Authie (27/7). Entrained at Doullens for Arques (30/7).

14th (Service) Battalion (Swansea). 114th Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division: Moved from Septenville to Hérissart (1/7). To Franvillers (3/7), Heilly (4/7), Citadel Camp (5/7), front line (White Trench) Mametz Wood (8/7). On left of 114th Brigade’s attack at Mametz Wood (10/7). Casualties 388. Via Citadel to Buire (11/7). Entrained at Méricourt for Longpré (12/7) and from there marched to Mouflers. To Gorenflos (14/7), Couin (15/7), reserve bivouacs south-west of Sailly-au-Bois (16/7). Relieved 10th Welsh in right sub sector Hébuterne (19/7). To Sailly (23/7), Authie (27/7). Entrained at Doullens for Arques (30/7).

15th (Service) Battalion (Carmarthenshire). 114th Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division. Moved: Moved from Septenville to Hérissart (1/7). To Franvillers (3/7), Heilly (4/7), Citadel Camp (5/7), Pommiers Redoubt (9/7). In reserve during 114th Brigade’s attack on Mametz Wood (10/7). Casualties – 245. Relieved in wood (12/7) and via Citadel marched to Dernancourt. Entrained for Longpré and from there marched to Buigny-l’Abbé. To Domqueur (14/7), Couin (15/7). Relieved 1/5th Gloucestershire in front line between Serre and Puisieux Road (16/7). To Sailly-au-Bois (19/7), Bois de Warnimont Wood (28/7). Entrained at Doullens for Arques (30/7).

16th (Service) Battalion (Cardiff City). 115th Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division: At Toutencourt (1/7). To Acheux (2/7), Buire (3/7), Carnoy via Méaulte and Bécordel-Bécourt (5/7). Moved forward to Caterpillar Wood (6/7). With 11th South Wales Borderers lead 15th Brigade’s assault on Mametz Wood (7/7). Attacking towards the ‘Hammerhead’ the Welsh were soon swept by machine gun fire from the wood ahead and Flatiron and Sabot Copses to their right. Withdrew later with 283 casualties. In support of 113th and 114th Brigades in Mametz Wood (10/7). Took up positions along railway running through western side of wood (11/7). In attack at 3 p.m. Relieved (12/7). Casualties – 70. To Couin via Warloy, Méaulte, Buire, Ribemont (13/7). Via Courcelles and Colincamps relieved 8th Worcestershire in right sub sector Hébuterne (14/7). To Courcelles (18/7), front line (22/7), Courcelles (26/7), Vauchelleslès-Authie via Bertrancourt, Bus-lès-Artois and Louvencourt (28/7), bivouacs between Beauval and Candas (30/7). Entrained for St. Omer (31/7).

17th (Service) Battalion (1st Glamorgan). 119th Brigade, 40th Division: Arrived Boisbergues from Bonnières (4/11). To Nœux (15/11).

18th (Service) Battalion (2nd Glamorgan). 119th Brigade, 40th Division: Arrived Le Meillard from Fortel (5/11). To Rougefay (15/11).

19th (Service) Battalion (Glamorgan Pioneers). Pioneers, 38th (Welsh) Division: Arrived Puchevillers (1/7). To Méricourt 3/7), Grove Town (5/7), Minden Post (6/7). Worked on road repairs. To Loop Trench (7/7), Minden Post (8/7) – worked on Queen’s Nullah. To Mametz Wood (9/7) – took part in operations there until relieved and to Citadel Camp (11/7). Entrained at Grove Town for Longpré (12/7) and from there marched to Gorenflos. To Thièvres (15/7), The Dell (18/7). Worked on trench improvements. To Bois du Warnimont (28/7). Headquarters and 3 companies to Authieule, ‘B’ Company to Beauval (30/7). ‘B’ Company entrained at Candas for St. Omer, rest from Doullens (31/7).
