5th (Service) Battalion. 42nd Brigade, 14th (Light) Division: Commenced move from positions east of Arras during last week of July. Reached Candas (31/7). Entrained for Méricourt (7/8) and from there marched to Buire-sur-l’Ancre. To Fricourt (12/8). Part of battalion on loan to 43rd Brigade as reserve and subsequently involved in attack on Delville Wood (18/8). To trenches at edge of Delville Wood (21/8). In centre of 42nd Brigade attack (24/8) – advancing at 5.45 a.m. clearing enemy from edge of wood – right flank un supported withdrew to second line. Casualties – 201. To Fricourt (26/8), Delville Wood (28/8), Fricourt (31/8) and from there moved by buses to Méricourt. Entrained there for Airaines and marched to Vergies – arriving 2.30 a.m. (1/9). To Méricourt (11/9). Moved forward to Montauban and via Delville Wood into action towards Gueudecourt (15/9) – ‘C’ and ‘D’ Companies capturing 3 field guns at Bull’s Road. Relieved and to Montauban (16/9). Casualties – 264. Returned same day to front line – attack cancelled and withdrew. Moved to area around Albert and from there to Grand-Rullecourt.
6th (Service) Battalion. 60th Brigade, 20th (Light) Division: Arrived Lucheux from south of Armentières (25/7). To Vauchelles-lès-Authie (26/7), Courcelles-au-Bois (28/7). Moving into line opposite Serre (29/7) it fell to the Battalion to clear what is described by its historian Major W. de B. Wood as trenches ‘waist-deep with our dead.’ Relieved and to Courcelles (6/8).
