5th (Service) Battalion. 26th Brigade, 9th (Scottish) Division: Moved up to Celestines Wood (30/6) and remained in reserve until withdrawn to Grove Town during evening (1/7). To Billon Wood (4/7). In reserve south of Montauban at beginning of operations at Longueval and Delville Wood (13/7). Latter involved in heavy hand-to-hand fighting while clearing enemy from Longueval and Waterlot Farm. Relieved and to Carnoy (19/7). To Sandpit Camp (20/7), Ailly-le-Haut-Clocher (23/7), Bruay (26/7). Arrived Remaisnil (5/10). 6th (Service) Battalion. 45th Brigade, 15th (Scottish) Division: Arrived Heuzecourt (28/7). To Vignacourt (31/7), Mirvaux (3/8), Bresle (4/8), Scots Redoubt (8/8), support positions at Contalmaison (10/8). Relieved 13th Royal Scots in front line (12/8). Attacked Switch Line during night. Withdrew to reserve positions near Shelter Wood (19/8). To front line Martinpuich (23/8). Co-operated with 1st Division during attack on Intermediate Line (24/8). Attack on Martinpuich (15/9) – advancing through leading waves at 3 p.m. – drove enemy from north-eastern end of village. Casualties – 240. An interesting story regarding a wooden cross erected at the village is recorded in the Regimental history of the Cameron Highlanders. The names of the dead were stamped on metal strips and fixed to the cross. Later, 1 man that had been missing and believed killed would take his name down when passing through Martinpuich later in the war. Relieved in Tangle, Ham and Egg Trenches (16/9) and into reserve at The Cutting, Contalmaison and Pearl Alley (17/9). To Baizieux Wood via Millencourt (18/9), Bresle (4/10). Relieved 9th Green Howards west of Le Sars (8/10).
