Ilyushin was a brilliant aeronautical engineer who designed one of the Soviet Air Force’s most successful airplanes: the Il-2 Shturmovik. However the Il-2 he designed was never fast enough so it was improved and became the Il-10 which saw service in the last months of the war. Ilyushin also designed the main Soviet long-range bombers, the DB-3 and the Il- 4. Ilyushin was awarded the STALIN Prize in 1942, 1943 and 1946.
