Keyes was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for his courageous attempt to assassinate ROMMEL. Keyes was a member of LAYCOCK’s Commando groups who participated in various missions in Syria and Crete. He was then selected to go on a dangerous mission to attack Rommel’s headquarters. On 17 November he and his group were landed by submarine near Appolonia and they attacked their target. Many were killed but Rommel no longer used the building. Keyes was killed during this mission.
