Buckner, General Simon Bolivar, 1886-1945

Son of a Confederate general of the Civil War, born to his father in old age, Buckner commanded the American forces in the Aleutians for most of the war. He was eventually appointed to lead the 10th Army in the assault on Okinawa, the final stepping stone for an amphibious assault on the Japanese Home Islands themselves, and rapidly established a reputation as a dynamic and intelligent leader. He was killed in action on 18 June, almost at the very end of the battle which had cost the lives of 12,000 Americans and 110,000 Japanese.
