The list which follows is in no sense to be regarded as a full bibliography for the history of William the Conqueror and his times. Its purpose is simply to give further precision to the citations supplied in the footnotes to this book; to direct attention to some of the principal authorities on which the author has relied; and to indicate, if only in part, his debt to his fellow-scholars. The conventional distinction between primary and secondary authorities has been retained, but it must be emphasized that many of the works given in the latter category contain texts of original documents, and are often here included for that reason. The editions quoted are normally those which have been cited in the footnotes. Volumes in the ‘Rolls Series’ are marked by the letters ‘RS’; publications of theSociété des Antiquaires de Normandie and of the Société de I'Histoire de Normandie are indicated respectively by the letters ‘SAN’ and ‘SHN’.
