In the age of aviation and the motor car, locomotive designers sought to lure passengers back to the railroads with a new generation of high-speed, modern designs. First applied to the marquee passenger expresses of the US, the term “streamliner” came to describe the steam, diesel, and electric locomotives that were sculpted for speed.
