Diesel Power Meets Electricity

Diesel-electric traction emerged as the economically and functionally superior successor to steam power in the 1940s. Power is derived from a diesel engine (the “prime mover”), but is transformed into electricity by a generator that powers motors in the trucks, which in turn propel the train.
