This is the Henry VIII Gatehouse to St Barts. Inside one of the most famous introductions in literature, between Holmes and Watson, took place beginning with the words ‘You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive.’

This is near the location of Jabez Wilson’s pawnbrokers shop in The Red-headed League, at that time a very shabby area but now smart with prestigious office buildings, cafes and interesting pubs.

Entrance to Bank underground line: the walk takes a number of trips to local Holmesian locations from this spot – there are seats here to rest on and plan each venture

The Bank of England: in the BBC production of Sherlock, Moriarty accessed the Bank of England, Pentonville prison and The Tower of London on the same day, just to show Holmes that he could. Pastiche writers have enjoyed linking Holmes and the bank together.

The Tower of London features in The Sign of Four and is a wonderful location in its own right.

On the way from Cannon Street to Aldgate you can take a trip up to the top of the Monument, built between 1671 and 1677 to commemorate the Great Fire of London, and gain a grand view of this part of London.
