The St Pancras case is under discussion by Holmes and Watson as The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place begins. The station and hotel alongside were started in 1863 and the completed complex was one of the architectural wonders of the late Victorian period. This is a shot of the Hogwarts-like towers of St Pancras Hotel and seen from the courtyard of the British Library, which moved alongside St Pancras station in 1998 and was the largest public building to be built in twentieth-century Britain.

The Adventure of the Retired Colourman sees Holmes and Watson take a trip to The Royal Albert Hall to hear Carina sing. Six days after Conan Doyle’s death a mass séance was held here in the hope of speaking to him (see text).

The Adventure of the Devil’s Foot, is a tale of horror and madness set in Cornwall. It sees Holmes solving the case before acting as both judge and jury (see text).

Norfolk features in The Gloria Scott and Norwich, its capital, in The Adventure of the Dancing Men. Conan Doyle liked motoring in the county (see text). This is a panoramic view of the city of Norwich. (Photograph by Daniel Tink)
