The kid has her own apartment, is probably starring in a spin-off as well, but as you now know, she’s a major crossover character in this one. Kid’s dad and soon-to-be divorcée are legit roommates now, kid’s dad tells soon-to-be divorcée many times, over the course of the first season, that this is all happening for a reason, that everything happens for a reason. This is meant genuinely, and with no intent to discount free will, but rather to convey that at least in this particular situation, many positive things have resulted. Yet here please let us refer you to almost all the books she’s ever written for the recurring theme of NO IT DOES NOT. In the second episode, the soon-to-be divorcée maybe rolls her eyes toward the camera, she’s choosing her battles now due to the overarching battle of being soonly divorced, in the third episode she says something patronizing like It’s sweet that you think that, and in the fourth episode she’s like OKAY THEN THE PRESIDENT WHAT IS THE REASON THE PRESIDENT IS HAPPENING, meaning this to stand in for any and all terrible things that happen for no good reason. But by the end of the first season, having established and explored the god-no-god issue that heightens the will-they-won’t-they, and for maybe the first time ever in her life, she has softened on the idea by some small degree, at least enough to acknowledge that a beautiful thing has transpired post–shitty thing, regardless of any evidence connecting those events and regardless of her position on this adage, she knows she is receiving something special, something she couldn’t have known she needed in the wake of this massively shitty life change. Her old bud and his kid have turned up in the apartment and they have become a family of sorts, a family where the individual members, only some of whom are related by blood, decide separately and together what a family is, and it’s such a particular kind of gift that if you’d asked her a year ago Okay, if we take away your husband but you get to have this new weird little family experience with these people, you have to trust us that it’s a gift, one whose meaning will become clear over time, what would you do, she’d have been like Yeah, I think I’ll keep my husband, but then she wouldn’t have known about this gift, or what it would ultimately mean for her life, which she still doesn’t, not really, but anyway not to spoil anything but by the time spring rolls around, if you came back and asked her then Okay, now, if we took away your weird little family gift and gave you back your husband and your exact same life, she’d say that was beyond her imagination.
