APPENDIX 1

Notes on performance of aircraft used operationally by Fighter Command and the Luftwaffe, July/October 1940

German aircraft detailed are those actually employed on sorties or met in combat over the Channel. Night fighters and close reconnaissance aircraft are not included. The lists of sub-types actually used in the Battle of Britain are taken from Luftwaffe Quartermaster General’s returns for the period.

VI CKERS-SUPERMARI NE SPITFIRE MK. I

After winning three successive Schneider Trophy contests with their high-speed record-breaking seaplanes. Super-marines built to Air Ministry Specification F7/30, a cranked-wing fixed-undercarriage fighter, K2890, with a 600 h.p. Rolls-Royce Goshawk steam-cooled engine. This aircraft fulfilled its specification requirements, but its designer, R. J. Mitchell, did not consider that it was the thing for future combat. Accordingly, he set about designing the interceptor he thought the R.A.F. ought to want. This was to have an enclosed cockpit, retractable undercarriage and four machine-guns. This met Air Ministry Specification F5/34. The advent of the Rolls-Royce PV-12 Merlin dictated changes in the design, and around Mitchell’s later plans a new specification, F37/34, was written. The result was the Spitfire, and the prototype, K5054, flew for the first time on March 5th, 1936. It bore the Vickers-Supermarine type number, 300.

On K5054 the engine was a Merlin C giving 1,030 h.p. at 16,250 feet, and the propeller was a de Havilland fixed-pitch two-blade wooden type. A tail-skid was fitted, the cockpit canopy was flat-topped and the exhausts were flush.

In 1937 production of the Spitfire Mk. I with the Merlin II engine and a wooden propeller began. Deliveries started from the Eastleigh factory in 1938, and Nos. 19 and 66 squadrons at Duxford were the first to receive them. These aircraft bore the same type number (300) as the prototype Spitfire, and it was allocated to the 1,531 aircraft built.

Tests carried out to improve take-off and climb were made by fitting the prototype with a de Havilland three-blade two position propeller. These were fitted from the seventy-seventh aircraft to come off the assembly line. A bubble cockpit hood also became standard on later models, this type having replaced the flat canopy.

The Spitfire Mk. Is in service had four .303 machine-guns, but this was changed to eight .303 Browning guns in the Mk. IA. In February 1939 one aircraft was fitted experimentally with two 20 m.m. guns, and this version, also carrying four .303s, became the Mk. IB, thirty of which were delivered in August 1940 for operational trials in the Battle of Britain. The experimental 20 m.m. cannon Spitfire shot down a Dornier Do 17 in March 1940.

Two main differences distinguished the Spitfire Mk. II from the Mk. I. It was fitted with a Merlin XII engine and was built exclusively at Castle Bromwich.

The Mk. II incorporated some detailed refinements, and whereas the Mk. I had armour plating added in service, the Mk. II had it fitted on the production line.

Altogether 920 Mk. IIs were built; 750 as Mk. IIAs with eight machine-guns, and 170 as Mk. IIBs which carried four Brownings and two Hispano 20 m.m. cannon.

Deliveries of the Mk. II to the R.A.F. began on June 3rd, 1940.

In July 1940 Fighter Command possessed nineteen Spitfire squadrons. These were 19, 41, 54, 64, 65, 66, 72, 74, 92, 152, 222, 234, 266, 602, 603, 609, 610, 611, 616.

BRISTOL BLENHEIM FIGHTER

The Bristol Blenheim had its origins in the generosity and foresight of a private individual, Lord Rothermere. In 1934 he ordered from the Bristol Aeroplane Company the prototype of a high-speed 6/8 seat civil transport of advanced design, and powered by two 560 h.p. Mercury 4 radiais. This machine flew in April 1935, and was on immediate success, having the then phenomenal speed of 307 m.p.h. at 14,000 ft. All metal, the transport bore the number 142, and was a low-wing monoplane with refinements like a retractable undercarriage.

Performance of the 142 proved so good that Lord Rothermere presented the aircraft to the nation, as a gift. It was refitted with 640 h.p. Mercury 6.S.2 motors and had its civil registration G-ABCZ replaced by the serial K7557. Known as the ‘Britain First’ the aircraft served as a test-bed for its direct development, the Blenheim, for which Specification B.28/35 was evolved.

Only major external differences between the ‘Britain First’ and the prototype Blenheim I light bomber, lay in the raising of the wing to mid-position, and the modification of the engine nacelles for twin Mercury 8s, which developed 840 h.p. each. The Blenheim had the type number 142A and the prototype, K7022, flew for the first time in June 1936.

Production version of the Blenheim was the type 142M and the first—K7037—left the factory in November 1936. Seating three, the Mk. I had an all-up-weight of 12,500 lb., top speed of 277 m.p.h. at 20,000 feet, and a maximum range of 1,165 miles at 200 m.p.h.

The sturdiness and good all-round qualities of the type prompted the Air Ministry to order a number of Blenheims as fighters, to be known as the Mk. 1F. These had an armoured nose and four .303 Browning guns in a ventral gun pack, in addition to the bomber’s single Browning in the port wing and single-gun dorsal turret.

Blenheim fighters pioneered airborne radar, and achieved their first success on the night of July 22nd, 1940. They went into squadron service in 1938 and equipped the following squadrons: Nos. 23, 25, 29, 64, 68, 145, 219, 222, 600, 601, and 604.

THE GLOSTER GLADIATOR

Designed as a private venture, the Gloster Gladiator was found to conform to specification F.7/30, to which the original Goshawk engine Blackburn and Westland biplanes, and the original inverted gull-wing Spitfire had been designed.

An aerodynamically cleaned up development of the Gloster Gauntlet which made such a spectacular début at the S.B.A.C. Display in 1933, it had a cantilever single-strut undercarriage with Dowty internally-sprung wheels, a single-bay wing cellule, and double the armament standard on R.A.F. aircraft over the previous two decades—two Vickers guns in the fuselage and two Lewis guns under the wings.

Powered by a 645 h.p. Bristol Mercury VI S enclosed by a short chord cowling, the prototype (K5200) first flew in September 1934 designated the D.S.37. In July 1935 the Gladiator was ordered for the R.A.F. to Spec. 14/35, the initial contract being for twenty-three machines. A further 186 were ordered in September 1935 and production continued until April 1940, by which time 311 Gladiators had been delivered to the R.A.F.

The production model was fitted with the 840 h.p. Mercury IX engine and a medium chord cowling. It also differed from the prototype in having an enclosed cockpit and four Browning .303 machine-guns.

The basic structure of the Gladiator was orthodox—steel tube and strip construction with fabric-covered wings and rear fuselage assembly, and metal skinning for the front fuselage. A feature not usually found in biplanes was the trailing edge flaps on both upper and lower wings.

In 1938, the Fleet Air Arm took an interest in the Gladiator as a shipboard fighter, and thirty-two production Gladiator IIs were fitted with temporary arrester hooks for use as interim deck-landing fighters. These were followed by sixty Sea Gladiator IIs which carried a dinghy in a fairing beneath the fuselage, and featured other modifications dictated by their naval role. They were delivered to the Navy during 1939–40.

Largely replaced in Fighter Command by the outbreak of war, Gladiators went to France with Nos. 607 and 615 Squadrons of the Advanced Air Striking Force. During the Battle of Britain they equipped No. 247 Squadron at Roborough, charged with defending the Royal Naval dockyards at Plymouth.

Sea Gladiators in the Battle of Britain belonged to 804 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm.

THE HAWKER HURRICANE

Many of Britain’s most famous military aircraft owe their existence to ‘private ventures’ initiated by far-sighted men and firms in industry. This was the case with the development and production of the Hawker Hurricane, which played such an important part in the Battle of Britain.

The Hurricane was originally designed as a Rolls-Royce Goshawk-engined monoplane version of the Fury biplane, to carry four machine-guns. The advent of the Rolls-Royce PV-12 Merlin offered substantial improvements, however, and the fighter was redesigned around it.

Official views on single-seater fighter performance requirements were revised in 1934, and out of these changes came Air Ministry specification F5/34. The specification was investigated by Hawkers who prepared a new design, but the earlier plan showed greater promise. It was recognised by the Air Ministry when specification F36/34 was written around it, and they ordered a prototype—K5083, to be equipped with eight .303 machine-guns in the wings. K5083 flew on November 6th, 1935, powered by a Merlin C of 1,045 h.p.

Encouraged by its performance and the rearmament programmes Hawkers prepared to lay down a production line for 1,000 aircraft in anticipation of an order which was later justified.

Progressive development of the basic Hurricane type had started in 1935 when stressed-skin wings were first investigated. Metal wings began to replace fabric-covered wings on the production line in 1939.

First production Hurricane — L1457 — with Merlin II engine flew on October 12th, 1937. It differed from the prototype in having stub exhausts, strengthened canopy, modified rudder mass balance and altered undercarriage doors. Later a ventral fin was added to improve spin recovery. Armour-plating and bullet-proof windscreens were fitted in 1938, and as part of an attempt to increase fire power, one Hurricane was fitted with one 20 m.m. cannon slung beneath each wing.

The first Hurricane entered service with No. 111 Squadron at Northolt. The re-equipment of other squadrons was rapid and by September 3rd, 1939,497 Hurricanes had been delivered and eighteen squadrons equipped. All these aircraft were of the Mk. I type with eight .303 Browning machine-guns and alternative propeller installations: a Merlin II driving a Watts wooden two-bladed fixed-pitch airscrew, or a Merlin II of similar power with a standardised shaft for de Havilland or Rotol three-bladed metal airscrews.

The Hurricane Mk. II differed from the Mk. I in having a Merlin XX engine, a strengthened fuselage and a choice of wings—one pair designed for twelve Browning machine-guns and the other for four 20 m.m. cannon, both types capable of supporting 500 lb. weight in bombs.

The Hurricane Mk. IIA was an interim production version with strengthened fuselage to permit conversion to a later Mark, but fitted initially with eight-gun armament. Aircraft fitted with twelve Brownings were designated Mk. IIBs and those with four Hispanos Mk. IICs.

Delivery of Mk. IIAs to R.A.F. units began in August 1940, but the more heavily armed IIB and IIC did not reach the squadrons until 1941, although the IIC was first delivered to the R.A.F. in October 1940.

When war broke out the Hurricane was quickly in action with Nos. 1 and 73 Squadrons. In the Battle of Britain they equipped the following squadrons: Nos. 1, 3, 17, 32, 43, 46, 56, 73, 79, 85, 87, 111, 145, 151, 229, 232, 242, 245, 253, 257, 263, 302, 310, 312, 501, 504, 601, 605, 607, 615 and No. 1 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force.

THE FAIREY FULMAR

The Fairey Fulmar was designed at Heaton Chapel, Stockport, to meet specification 08/38 for a general purpose fleet fighter-bomber. Developed from a light bomber specification P4/34 the prototype made its maiden flight on January 4th, 1940, from Ringway near Manchester. The second prototype flew on April 6th and was delivered at Boscombe Down on May 3rd.

Production of the Fulmar as a two-seat fighter fitted with eight .303 Brownings in the wings, went ahead and in May the first production aircraft was delivered to the Service Trials Unit at Lee-on-Solent near Southampton.

The first three Fulmars for operational service were delivered to Worthy Down early in June 1940 for No. 806 Squadron. Fulmars also replaced Blackburn Skuas which 808 Squadron had used at Dunkirk. In the Battle of Britain Fulmars operated from Wick with No. 808 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm, under the control of No. 13 Group.

THE BOULTON PAUL DEFIANT MK. I

Encouraged by the success of the four-gun power-operated turrets being made for bombers, the R.A.F. decided to try them out in small, fast single-engined aircraft. As two-seater fighters they were intended to replace the Hawker Demon bi-planes.

The Hawker Hotspur and the Boulton Paul Defiant met the specification, F9/35, and after their initial flights the Defiant was selected.

The prototype flew for the first time on August 11th, 1937. The first production model first flew on July 30th, 1939.

The Defiant, whose turret was also designed and made by Boulton Paul, was superficially rather like the Hawker Hurricane and was about the same size. The crew of two were over the wing and a retractable fairing was fitted behind the turret which, when lowered, widened the four Browning guns field of fire.

The Defiant introduced a new tactical concept in two-seat fighters whereby no forward armament was carried. All offensive power was concentrated in the rear cockpit.

No. 264 Squadron took the first Defiants into action from Manston on May 12th, 1940, and found the idea paid handsome dividends during early engagements. On May 29th they put up the amazing record of destroying thirty-seven German aircraft. The Germans mistook the squadron for twelve exceptionally careless Hurricanes and dived on their supposedly defenceless tails only to be destroyed in a withering concentration of fire. By May 31st Defiants had shot down sixty-five aircraft, mainly bombers, over Dunkirk.

The Defiant’s success was short lived, however. The Luftwaffe found its weakness and on July 19th scored heavily against No. 141 Squadron by attacking from the front. Its other weakness was the the brain flying it was not the brain firing the guns. It was withdrawn from daylight operations in August 1940 but as an A.I. radar-equipped night fighter it did extremely well, shooting down more raiders per interception than any other night fighter in the winter of 1940–1.

THE GRUMMAN MARTLET MK. I

No. 804 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm, which operated with Sea Gladiators from Wick under the control of No. 13 Group, started re-equipping with Grumman Martlets in October 1940.

The Martlet thus became the only American fighter to go into action against the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain for one week.

Developed from the Grumman G-36 (XF F-3) the G-36A Martlet was ordered by the British Government for the Fleet Air Arm in 1939. The first two reached Britain at the end of August 1940. By October 15th, fifteen had been delivered and by the 19th a further sixteen had reached the Navy.

Modified to British specifications, the Martlet differed from the U.S. Navy version in having bullet-proof windscreen, armour-plate, light bomb racks and British-type deck-arrester gear. The armament was increased to four guns by the removal of the .50 calibre guns in the fuselage and the addition of four .303 Brownings in the wings.

Operationally the Martlet was highly efficient and had a considerable margin of speed over the Fulmar.

DORNIER 17

In July 1937 a new German medium bomber, the Do 17, caused a sensation at the Zürich international flying meeting. The slim machine outpaced most of the first-line interceptors in the show, although the onlookers did not know that it was operating at low weight and with special engines.

Nicknamed the ‘Flying Pencil’, the Do 17 was originally conceived as a high-speed commercial aircraft for Lufthansa and it flew for the first time, in civil guise, in the autumn of 1934. Its potentialities as a bomber were realised only after the prototypes had been stored away as unacceptable for civil use.

The first bomber version was flown in 1935 and the Luftwaffe received the Do 17E-1 at the end of 1936. This was slow (top speed 220 m.p.h.) and carried only two machine-guns. Its reconnaissance counterpart was the Do 17F.

Despite its speed the Do 17 performed well in the Spanish Civil War, and managed to avoid interception by fighters. In service the 17E was followed by the Do 17M-1 which had Bramo 323A radiais of 900 h.p. in place of the earlier 750 h.p. BMW VI-7.3 engines.

Re-engined with BMW 132N radiais the Do 1/P emerged and was built in quantity.

Following this came a re-design of the front fuselage which was more bulbous, with a ventral underhang, and accommodation for a crew of four. In this form the aircraft first appeared as the Do 17s of which only three were built, with DB 600 engines.

Fifteen pathfinder versions of the 17s were built as the 17U and these had an extra radio operator.

As in the case of the Heinkel 111, endeavours were made to restrict the use of DB 600 series engines to fighters and the next Do 17 to appear reverted to Bramo 323p radiais. Known as the Do 17z this variant was widely employed over Britain.

Armament was increased to six 7.9 m.m. machine-guns, two firing forward, one dorsal, one ventral and two through side windows. During the Battle of Britain two additional free-mounted machine-guns were added and some aircraft had the lower front machine-gun replaced by a 20 m.m. cannon. Among the measures adopted by Do 17 crews to try and shake off R.A.F. fighters was the carrying of stick hand grenades which were thrown out in the wake of the aircraft.

Like the He 111 the Do 17 had its crew grouped forward, was inadequately armed, and suffered accordingly.

Three Kampfgeschwader, one bomber Gruppe (K.Gr.606) and a number of long-range reconnaissance Staffeln were equipped with Do 17s for operations over Britain.

The following variants of Do 17 were operated in the Battle of Britain.

FOCKE-WULF 200

A civil transport (the Condor) converted to military use, the FW 200 was the only four-motor aircraft used for bombing in the Battle of Britain. The FW 200C-1 first appeared late in 1939 and only a few were available to take part in the Norwegian campaign.

After the fall of France 1./KG40 was established at Bordeaux with seven FW 200CS for maritime reconnaissance and shipping strike. Several of the unit’s aircraft were shot down over Britain during the Battle. In order to put in a maximum effort against Merseyside on the nights August 28th–31st, 1940, aircraft of 1./KG40 were used as ordinary bombers.

The aircraft carried a crew of five and mounted three machine-guns and one 20 m.m. cannon.

HEINKEL 59

The obsolete Heinkel 59 float biplane was used by the Luftwaffe for air-sea rescue in the Channel. Several were brought down by R.A.F. fighters following a British Government protest at the use of the red cross for the recovery of valuable aircrews and ‘reconnaissance’. The 59 had originally been produced as a torpedo and general purpose bomber in the Luftwaffe’s early days.

HEINKEL 111

Heinkel 111s from five Geschwader operated over Britain during the summer of 1940, together with many more of the type from reconnaissance staffeln.

First flown early in 1935, the He 111 was in operational service with the Luftwaffe in 1937. In its early versions, it had a stepped cockpit, elliptical wings and ‘dustbin’ gun-turret.

Early in 1939 the He 111P came into service with revised straight-tapered wing, unstepped cockpit and ventral gun cupola. To avoid a shortage of Daimler Benz DB 601 liquid-cooled engines, which were required for the Me 109 and Me 110 fighters, a further variant, the 111H, was introduced with Jumo 211 motors. The 111H began to equip squadrons in the autumn and winter of 1939, and it was in full-scale production throughout 1940 and ensuing years.

The He 111H was a low wing all-metal monoplane carrying a crew of five or six made up of pilot, bomb-aimer, radio operator and two or three gunners. Armament consisted of five 7.9 mm. machine-guns, one in the nose, one each ventral and dorsal positions, and two firing from the side windows.

During the Battle of Britain efforts were made to increase the armament while at the same time armour protection was given to the crew. On some aircraft a 20 mm. cannon was fitted in place of the nose machine-gun and on others a remotely controlled machine-gun was mounted in the tail.

In the Polish, Belgian and French campaigns the He 111 had not suffered too badly, but when flown against the R.A.F. it was shown to be very vulnerable, as its speed was not high enough for it to escape British fighters. Its armament was inadequate and without powered turrets the hand-operated guns were difficult to use. Some Heinkel crews resorted to throwing out tin boxes attached to reels of wire, in the hope that they would catch in a fighter’s propeller.

As a night bomber the He 111 was more successful in 1940–1 and the pathfinder gruppe K.Gr.100 used Heinkels carrying the ‘X’ and ‘Y’ beam navigation/bombing systems. For mine-laying and anti-shipping strike, the He 111 was used by KG4 and KG26 respectively.

Some Heinkels used over Britain were of the early ‘D’ variant produced in 1937. The sub-types operated in the Battle of Britain were as follows)

HEINKEL 113

In many combat reports for the period August-October 1940 reference was made to combats with and sightings of Heinkel 113s. The myth of the 113 has been perpetuated in several books since the war. Designated He 100D, the so-called He 113 was an attractive and very fast interceptor, first flown in January 1938. Seven prototypes, three pre-production and twelve production He 110s were built, but not one was accepted by the Luftwaffe for operational use. Six prototypes were sold to Russia, and the three pre-production machines to Japan.

The batch of twelve remaining, known as the He 100D, formed into a unit for the defence of the Heinkel Marienehe works and were flown by Heinkel test pilots. To give the impression that the 100 was in service with the Luftwaffe, a flood of propaganda pictures was issued showing the line up of He 100s with full camouflage and false unit markings. The type was given the spurious designation He 113. The He 113s reported in the Battle of Britain resulted from faulty aircraft recognition and were, in fact, Me 109s.

HEINKEL 115

Employed for coastal reconnaissance and minelaying, the He 115 seaplane was used by five Küstenfliegerstaffeln employed by Luftflotten 2, 3 and 5.

Developed from a civil main seaplane, the 115 carried a crew of three and mounted two machine-guns, one forward and one dorsal. Two variants were operated, the 115B-1 and c.

JUNKERS 87

The Junkers 87 Stuka was a prime weapon in the Luftwaffe armoury until the summer of 1940, when its poor performance and vulnerability led to heavy casualties. Employed in the convoy battles of July and the strikes against southern England in August, the Ju 87 began to fade out of the picture on August 19th, and the main units with the type (under Fliegerkorps VIII) were withdrawn to the Pas de Calais on August 29th. Some raids With the remaining Ju 87 units were made on the 30th.

The Stuka never reappeared over Britain and confined its activities to fronts where opposition was less intense.

Descended from the K.47 built in Sweden in 1928, the Ju 87 had many staunch adherents in the Luftwaffe, as where air supremacy was assured it offered a cheap and easy method of precision bombing. First flown with a Rolls-Royce Kestrel engine in 1935, the Ju 87 went into service in 1937 as the Ju 87A powered by a 635 h.p. Jumo 210 inline engine. Both the 87A and the 87B participated in the Spanish Civil War, the latter having more power, spatted in place of trousered undercarriage, altered hood and many detail modifications.

The Ju 87B swept a path for the armoured divisions through Poland, Holland, Belgium and France, and six Stukakampfgeschwader were finally ranged against Britain. With its cranked wing and prominent undercarriage, the Ju 87 bore an unmistakable outline. It carried a crew of two and was armed with two fixed and one movable machine-guns.

The variants flown over Britain were:

JUNKERS 88

The Junkers 88 was designed as a medium/dive bomber with the speed of a fighter. While the 88 was under development, however, the new generation of British fighters caught up and surpassed it with the result that serious losses were suffered over Britain in 1940.

image

image

First flown in December 1936, the Ju 88 was only at the pre-production batch stage on the outbreak of war. The first ten Ju 88A-1s were hurriedly put into service and attacked the Ark Royal in September 1939.

The A-1 variant was that mainly used in the Battle of Britain. It had twin Jumo engines, slatted wing dive brakes, and a crew of four grouped, as usual, in the nose. Armament comprised three machine-guns, nose, ventral and dorsal, although an additional gun was later fitted in the dorsal position. Armour protection was increased during August and September 1940.

Against the Spitfire and Hurricane the Ju 88 was vulnerable, but it could outpace the obsolescent Blenheim if which tried to intercept it.

MESSERSCHMITT 109

In the period 1939–40, the Me 109 was undoubtedly one of the finest single-seat fighters in the world, and it was a most worthy opponent of the Hurricane and Spitfire. Due to lack of production organisation and any sense of urgency, however, the Me 109 was not available in sufficient numbers to decide the outcome of the Battle of Britain.

Flown initially in 1935, the Me 109 proved its worth in 109B and C forms in the Spanish Civil War. The type was steadily developed up to 1939 when the E series came into service and these formed the bulk of the fighter formations used in the summer of 1940.

Among the 109s advantages were speed, rate of climb, and the ability to go straight into a dive due to a direct injection fuel pump. Its faults lay in delicate handling qualities which required much experience to master. Unlike the Hurricane and Spitfire, the Me 109 had the petrol tank behind the pilot, and it was vulnerable.

In the later stages of the Battle, improved engine ratings gave the 109 a better rate of climb than the Spitfire above 20,000 ft. Originally, protection for the pilot was lacking, but in July armour was fitted behind the fuselage petrol tank, and armour plates were added round the pilot’s head and neck— although these interfered with the view from the cockpit. Throughout, the Me 109 suffered from lack of range and the non-availability of suitable drop tanks.

No less than ten Jagdgeschwader were used against Britain, and many 109s operated as fighter-bombers in October 1940.

Variants used:

Me 109B

MESSERSCHMITT 110

Like the Junkers 87, the Messerschmitt 110 started the war with a false aura of invincibility. In the Zerstörer, or Destroyer, class, the 110 was intended as a long-range escort fighter to clear the path for the bomber formations. When they first came into service in 1939 the Me nos had hand-picked crews who were supposed to represent an élite corps.

image

The Zerstörer’s reputation was maintained until the attacks opened on Channel convoys in July, when it was rudely shattered. Throughout the period July–October Zerstörergruppen suffered severe losses out of all proportion to the effect they achieved and in the end they themselves had to be escorted by Me 109s.

The Me 110 should have been withdrawn from service in the west in August, but overall shortage of fighters necessitated their retention. In addition the High Command was impressed by the success claims which Z.Gruppen put in—these being grossly exaggerated.

The Me 110 was first flown in May 1936, but due to engine changes, etc., it was not in large-scale production until 1939. In the Battle of Britain three Zerstörer Geschwader were operated together with several Me 110 reconnaissance staffeln and the ground attack unit Erprobungsgruppe 210 which had Me 110 and Me 109. In October many Me nos were converted into fighter-bombers.

Lack of manoeuvrability and speed and structural weakness, particularly in the tail, were the main faults of the 110. Two crew were carried and the armament was four machine-guns and two 20 mm. cannon in the nose, plus a free mounted machine-gun in the dorsal position.

FIAT BR.20 CICOGNA (STORK)

Early in October 1940 Mussolini despatched a force of seventy-five BR.20 bombers to participate in the air war against Britain. The move was more political than military and the Luftwaffe was somewhat embarrassed by the arrival of its new comrades in arms. The BR.20S were supplemented by Squadriglia 172 with five cz-1007 Bis reconnaissance bombers, but these did not operate against Britain.

Stationed in the Brussels area, the BR.20S belonged to 13 Stormo and 43 Stormo re-designated KG13 and KG43 respectively. They operated first by night on October 25th, against Harwich, and then by day on October 29th, when fifteen bombers approached Ramsgate with a heavy escort of Italian and German fighters. On the latter occasion none were shot down, but many were damaged by A.A. fire.

The BR.20S made one more daylight raid after the Battle of Britain was over (on November 11th) and lost three aircraft out of ten despatched. After this they raided only by night, putting up seven small sorties between November and January when they were withdrawn to Italy.

One of the most modern Italian aircraft at the time, the BR.20 was not, however, suitable for use against the R.A.F. It lacked defensive armament and armour. Of all-metal construction, it carried a crew of five and mounted three machine-guns, one nose, one dorsal and one ventral.

Weights: Empty, 14,300 lb.; loaded, 22,220 lb.

Bomb Load: Maximum, 2,550 lb.

Performance: Maximum speed, 255 m.p.h. at 13,500 ft.; cruising speed, 220 m.p.h. at 13,450 ft.; service ceiling, 15,000 ft.; range cruising, 1,350 miles with 2,200 lb. of bombs.

FIAT CR.42 FRECCIA (ARROW)

As part of the escort for the seventy-five BR.20 bombers in their raids on Britain, the Regia Aeronautica provided fifty Fiat CR.42 biplane fighters which were based in Belgium at the beginning of October 1940. They formed the 18th Gruppo alternatively designated 18./JG56.

A delightful machine to fly, and one of the most manoeuvrable, the CR.42 was completely out-classed by modem monoplanes. When attacked it could only do flick rolls and tight turns to keep out of the way. Even when presented with a target, the two machine-guns in the engine cowling were insufficient to do much damage.

The CR.42 made only one sortie during the Battle of Britain, on October 29th, escorting bombers to Ramsgate. On their second and last daylight raid on November 11th, three were shot down by British fighters.

FIAT G.50 FALCO (FALCON)

The most up-to-date portion of the escort for Italy’s BR.20 bombers in Belgium was the 20th Gruppo (20./KG56) with forty-eight Fiat G.50 Falco single-seat fighters.

Although a low monoplane with retractable undercarriage, the G.50 had a top speed only 20 m.p.h. faster than that of the CR.42 biplane. The main advantage of the G.50, as with other Italian types, was its manoeuvrability.

The G.50 carried four machine-guns, two in the fuselage and two in the wings.

* These figures do not necessarily mean that the weight of bombs shown actually fell on the different targets, due to navigation errors, casualties, etc.

1The number of incendiaries is given in terms of incendiary containers, each of which held 36 1 Kilogramme incendiary bombs.

2Zerstorungziele : targets in harassing raids (StorangrijJen). In this type of operation specific industrial targets, especially aircraft and aero engine works, were attacked by single aircraft.

3Ausweichziele: Alternative and secondary targets. Railway communications were the chief objectives here. Figures in brackets denote amount dropped in attacks of under 100 tons of H.E. bombs. Attacks over 100 tons were referred to as Grossangriffen.
