Royal Scots Fusiliers

1st Battalion. 8th Brigade, 3rd Division: Arrived Candas (1/7) and from there marched to billets. To Flesselles (3/7), Vaux-sur-Somme (5/7), Carnoy (7/7) and from there Bronfay Farm. Took up positions in quarry north of Montauban (13/7). Attack on Bazentin-le-Grand (14/7) – in support leading waves held up at uncut German wire and forced to retire to start positions. Renewed attack more successful – gains held and consolidated. Relieved and to Longueval (19/7), Méaulte (25/7). Casualties since (7/7) – 370. Later in forward areas around Guillemont and Maitz Horn Farm. Occupied bivouacs and billets at Happy Valley, Great Bear, Talus Boisé, Sandpit Camp, Méaulte. Entrained at Méricourt for Candas (23/8). Began move to Béthune area (25/8). Entrained at St. Pol (7/10) and via Acheux and Vauchelles began tours in line Serre sector. Rest areas Bus-lès-Artois, Vauchelles, Courcelles. Attack on Serre (13/11) – on left of assault found German wire intact – small parties fought through to support line, but later forced to withdraw.

2nd Battalion. 90th Brigade, 30th Division: Assembled near Cambridge Copse for attack on Montauban (1/7). In support, followed 17th and 16th Manchester forward at 8.30 a.m. – village entered at 10.05 a.m. and Montauban Alley beyond soon after. Casualties – 170. Relieved from forward area (3/7). Successful attack on Maitz Horn Farm (9/7) – on right of assault took Maitz Horn Trench via sunken road leading from La Briqueterie – Commanding Officer Lieutenant-Colonel P.W.T. Macgregor-Whitton killed. Relieved and to Maricourt (11/7). Attack on Guillemont (30/7) – from assemby area east of Trônes Wood moved forward along Guillemont Road – village entered from south-west with few casualties – later became cut off – 650 casualties out of attacking force of 750 before relieved – majority either dead or missing. Moved to Béthune area (11/8). Returned to Somme and Flers area during October. Attack on Bayonet Trench (12/10) – withdrawal under heavy machine gun fire forced after advance of 150 yards. Transferred to Arras sector.

6th/7th (Service) Battalion. 45th Brigade, 15th (Scottish) Division: Arrived Prouville area (28/7). To Vignacourt (31/7), Bresle (4/8). Moved forward to forward area around Contalmaison (9/8). Attack on Switch Line (12/8) – objective taken and consolidated south-eastward from Munster Alley. In reserve during attack on Martinpuich (15/9). Relieved (18/9) and to rest areas around Baizieux Wood, Millencourt, Bresle. Back in forward area Le Sars sector by second week October. Rested out of line at Martinpuich, Contalmaison, Albert, Scots Redoubt.
