2nd Battalion. 12th Brigade, 4th Division: Moved forward from Bertrancourt for attack between Beaumont-Hamel and Serre (1/7) advancing at 8.35 a.m. on left of Serre Road crossed German line and then moved to right of Pendant Copse. Later strong counter attacks would force Battalion back to the captured Quadrilateral. By evening strength stood at 2 officers and 192 other ranks. Total going into action – 24 officers and 606 men. Withdrew to Mailly-Maillet (5/7). To front line (7/7), Bertrancourt (11/7). 12th Brigade took over part of line in front of Auchonvillers (17/7) – 2nd Essex being in reserve positions. In this action The Official History of The Great War records how 1 company lost its way and drifted to the right towards La Boisselle where it took 220 prisoners. 10th (Service) Battalion. 53rd Brigade, 18th (Eastern) Division: Moved forward from Carnoy for attack south-west of Montauban 7.30 a.m. (1/7) – Battalion historians Lieutenant-Colonel T.M. Banks and Captain R.A. Chell noting the blowing of Casino Point mine which filled the air with debris injuring some of the men. Assaulted Pommiers Redoubt with 7th Bedfordshire and 11th Royal Fusiliers at 8.30 a.m. – bombing party clearing 400 yards as far as White Trench. ‘B’ and ‘D’ Companies moved forward into Caterpillar Wood (3/7) finding enemy had retreated. Relieved from Pommiers and to Bronfay Farm (7/7). To Grove Town Camp (9/7), Bernafay Wood (14/7), Billon Wood (17/7). In action at Delville Wood (19/7)–(21/7).
