Attempt by Company to relieved 2nd Seaforth Highlanders at The Quadrilateral driven back – ‘D’ Company reached Quadrilateral after dark and held until ordered to withdraw next morning. Entrained at Proven for Longueau (17/9) and from there marched to Coisy. Via Allonville to Corbie (24/9). Brigade attack practised at Querrieu on way. To Méricourt-l’Abbé (25/9), Daours (30/9), Méaulte (7/10), Mansell Camp (8/10). Moved forward to south-east corner of Trônes Wood (9/10) and in afternoon via Guillemont and Ginchy took over trenches east of Lesbœufs. Attack on Rainy and Dewdrop Trenches (12/10). Relieved and to Trônes Wood (16/10). Casualties for period (9/10)– (14/10) – 385. To support positions on Ginchy-Lesbœufs Road (23/10). Via Bernafay Wood to Sandpit Camp (24/10), Corbie (27/10). Entrained for Airaines (30/10) and from there marched via Hallencourt to Bailleul south of Abbeville. To billets around Grébault-Mesnil (2/11).
7th (Service) Battalion. 49th Brigade, 16th (Irish) Division: Entrained at Fouquereuil for Longueau (29/8) and from there marched to Vaux-sur-Somme. To Happy Valley (31/8), Citadel Camp (3/9), via Billon Farm took over Dublin Trench (4/9). Moved forward to Angle Wood (5/9) – dug support trenches near Falfemont Farm. Later (attached to 15th Brigade, 5th Division) in attack south-west of Combles – attacking Combles Trench 4 p.m. – Official History of The Great War records – leading waves coming upon wire amongst the standing corn and tall weeds could not get forward due to machine gun fire. Another attempt made 7.30 p.m. also failed. Relieved and to Angle Wood (6/9). Casualties 273. To Bernafay Wood (7/9). Moved forward to Guillemont Station (8/9). Attack on Ginchy (9/9). Casualties – 143. Relieved and to Billon Farm (10/9), Sailly-le-Sec (11/9), Fontaine (18/9). Entrained for Ypres sector (21/9).

9th (Service) Battalion (Co. Armagh). 108th Brigade, 36th (Ulster) Division: On right of 108th Brigade front for attack on north bank of the Ancre (1/7) – main objective being the station at Beaucourt. Began advance across some 600 yards of No Man’s Land 2 minutes before zero (7.28 a.m.) – high casualties before reaching gaps in British wire. Came under heavy fire from machine gun brought up through tunnel and placed at top of shaft – attack called to a holt and withdrew to start positions by 8.a.m. Temp. Lieutenant Geoffrey St. George Shillington Cather awarded Victoria Cross for his efforts in retrieving wounded throughout evening and until his own death next morning. At roll call there would be no officers and just 80 men unwounded. To Martinsart area (2/7), Rubempré (5/7). Later via Berneville to Ypres sector.
