Attacking on northern side of Mount Street and from Rim Trench, passed through The Quarry and took all objectives. During the battle Private T. Hughes would win the Victoria Cross. Wounded, he returned to the fighting after having his wounds attended to, and single-handed put out of action a German machine gun. Relieved and to Carnoy (5/9). Strength just 124. Moved forward to Bernafay Wood (6/9) and from there into assembly trenches at Guillemont. Attack towards Ginchy (9/9) – leading waves immediately swept by machine gun fire. Relieved by 4th Grenadier Guards and to the craters at Carnoy (10/9). To Happy Valley (11/9), Vaux-sur-Somme (12/9), Huppy (18/9). Entrained at Abbeville for Bailleul (21/9).
