2nd Battalion. 25th Brigade, 8th Division: Attack on Ovillers (1/7). Relieved shortly after midnight and to Long Valley. Entrained at Dernancourt for Ailly-sur- Somme (3/7) and from there marched to St. Sauveur. To Fourdrinoy (4/7). Entrained at Longueau for Béthune area (6/7). Entrained at Lillers for Pont-Remy (15/10) and via Amiens and Ville went to Citadel Camp. Moved up into line near Lesbœufs via Trônes Wood (19/10). Attack on Zenith Trench (23/10). Casualties – 238. 3rd Battalion. 17th Brigade, 24th Division: Left Kemmel for Somme (23/7) and after training at Riencourt moved to Camp at Méaulte. To Carnoy Valley (7/8), Bernafay Wood in reserve (12/8), Carnoy Valley (14/8). Attacked towards High Holborn between Guillemont and Delville Wood (18/8) – gained some ground including Guillemont Station. Casualties – 225. Renewed attack by ‘D’ Company (21/8) – all officers ¾ of assault lost. Remainder (23 men) under a sergeant held gains until relieved after dark. 7th (Service) Battalion. 41st Brigade, 14th (Light) Division: Began moved towards Somme early in August and via Doullens, Albert and Montauban took over trenches west of Delville Wood (12/8). Relieved by 8th Rifle Brigade and to Montauban (14/8). To front line (17/8). On left of 41st brigade during attack on Orchard and Wood Lane trenches (18/8). Casualties – 270. Relieved at midnight and to Montauban. To line south-east of Delville Wood (25/8), Dernancourt (27/8). Entrained for Airaines (28/8) and from there marched to Warlus Camp near Amiens (28/8). Moved to forward area and in line at Delville Wood by (15/9). Attack towards Flers – lost heavily from enfilade machine gun fire from right flank while approaching Bulls Road – Lieutenant-Colonel. 10th (Service) Battalion. 59th Brigade, 20th (Light) Division: Arrived Sailly-au-Bois from Ypres area (27/7). To trenches south of Hébuterne (28/7). Relieved and to Beauval (18/8). To Doullens (19/8), Méaulte (20/8), camp about 3½ miles north of Bray (21/8), Carnoy craters (22/8). Heavy casualties from enemy shell fire. Successful attack around Guillemont (3/9). Relived and to Minden Post by 8.30 (5/9). Casualties – almost 300. To Talus Boisé (6/9), Corbie (7/9), Talus Boisé (11/9), trenches north-east of Ginchy (16/9). At dawn (17/9) it was found that position held was in fact a German communication trench running at right angles to enemy’s line. 12th (Service) Battalion. 60th Brigade, 20th (Light) Division: Left Bailleul (23/7) and via Sarton and Bus-lès-Artois went into camp at Courcelles-au-Bois (29/7). To trenches opposite Serre (6/8), Couin (14/8), Amplier (16/8), Méaulte via Fienvillers and Ville (21/8). To trenches on Carnoy-Montauban Road (22/8). Battalion records note that during evening 3rd Rifle Brigade passed down the road from front line and the 11th went by them in the opposite direction. At the same time the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th Battalions were all close by. At 5 p.m (3/9) moved forward into trenches west of Trônes Wood and relieved 8th Royal Munster Fusiliers after that battalion’s attack on Guillemont earlier in the day. To the craters in front of Carnoy (5/9), bivouacs 2 miles from Bray (7/9), Corbie (8/9), Méaulte (11/9), Citadel Camp (15/9), trenches south of Ginchy (16/9). In action at The Quadrilateral and in the fighting towards Morval. 13th (Service) Battalion. 111th Brigade, 37th Division: Arrived Humbercourt from Bailleulval (3/7). To Bresle (5/7), Albert in reserve to 56th Brigade (6/7), Tara-Usna Line (7/7). Relieved 8th North Staffordshire in front line La Boisselle during evening. Battalion historian D.H. Rowlands notes the dead of the Tyneside Scottish all around, many still with bolt-covers on their rifles. Withdrew to support line (10/7). Orders received to attack at 8.45 p.m. This assault was later cancelled but news of this came too late and Battalion went forward towards Ovillers as planned. A distance of 200 yards was covered and enemy’s third line reached. Over 200 prisoners taken. Casualties – including Commanding Officer, Adjutant and all Company Commanders – over 400. Withdrew to original German second line (just beyond Lochnagar Crater) (11/7).
