This was the day Buchenwald Concentration Camp was liberated, and Gebele wrote:

Mein kleiner Liebling! Sabine Sonnenschein!...

I heard that the living conditions are unbearable down below and I beg you, my Seelchen, take care with everything you do or touch. Do everything to avoid a last-minute infection. Together with this letter I send you some food and a set of clothes, I hope to your liking. Did the camp secretary hand you the parcels himself? And yesterday the washing and the shoes? I managed to find you a suitcase and ask you to put all your belongings in it.

Today I received a sad postcard with a message that my country house in Prien am Chiemsee has been subjected to an arson attack. It is heavily damaged. My anger is not for the perpetrators, but for the catastrophic powers that be, who make this sort of thing possible. On the other hand, my dear Seelchen, I can manage without my country house, since I have everything I need and, above all, I have you.

Today I also received a strange love letter from a young lady—such overtures from a woman to a man make me want to laugh. It really is shameless.

She wrote that she had heard from other girls and had seen with her own eyes, that I was in the habit of supporting you women wherever I could. She started by asking for food and ended with offering me her love in return.

Tell me, Sabine, are there more such unscrupulous individuals among you? I can’t understand it. In this case it concerned a German woman...(I won’t tell you what I thought about her).

Can I expect tomorrow or even today some more post from my little darling? Please write as soon as possible.

In the hope that a long letter detailing your needs and wishes will reach me soon, I leave you with best wishes and a thousand passionate kisses.

Your dear big boy, Franz
